Multi Player

What is Multi-Player Quake?

Multi-Player Quake is just lots of people playing Quake against each other, or doing a cooperative play. Normal Quake is capable of handling Multi-Player, but if you do not have a rather fast connection (greater or equal to 56k), then you will find it boring since you won't be able to move around like you want to, and the people with T1 connections will just scrap you. It is recommended that you download QuakeWorld from http://www.quakeworld.net and play QuakeWorld if you're one of those with not-too-cool net connections. There are many TC's (Total Conversions) and PC's (Partial Conversions) which adds little or big twists to Multi-Player gameplay. Some of the popular conversions include TeamFortress (http://www.planetquake.com/teamfortress/), and Capture The Flag (http://captured.com/threewave/).

How To

In Net Quake (Normal Quake), choose MultiPlayer at the main menu, choose Join Game, choose TCP/IP and type in the IP of the Quake server you are going to connect. In QuakeWorld, you can use GameSpy (www.gamespy.com) to easily connect to a QW Server, or you could start the QuakeWorld Client (qwcl.exe), and then type "connect [server's ip here]" without the quotation marks.

Deathmatch

Deathmatch (DM) is the most common form of online multi-player Quake. It's just people killing each other until the fraglimit (a certain score) is reached or the timelimit runs out. Make sure you practice a lot before playing online; the players usually don't tolerate newbies. (unless they are nice like me ^_^) It is highly-recommended that you play with mouse+keyboard rather than keyboard only. You won't have much chance surviving without using the mouse.

The first thing that you have to know in order to win DM's is to KNOW THE MAPS. Obviously, if you don't know where the weapons are and everything, you won't win. The second thing is to get some armor first. You are can die from just a single shot of rocket or grenade if you don't have any armor. The third thing to do is to get the weapons. But be cunning when you get weapons. Some players will snipe you with their rockets around places where people come often, so be careful. Also, remember that a lot of other players without good weapons will be there to get the weapons, too. The fourth thing is the powerups and items. All of the items in Quake respawns (reappears) at certain time intervals, so know the timing. If you get the timing right, you will be able to dominate the level by always getting Quad's and other powerups. If the server's deathmatch mode (there are 4 modes), is not set to 3, then weapons will disappear after people take them (then they reappear of course). So, if you know someone has taken the Rocket Launcher you were trying to get about 10 seconds ago, don't waste your time going for it again and waiting for it to reappear for 3 minutes. The basic keys to winning is practice and a little bit of intelligence.

Tricks

  • Ground-Shot: Basically, you aim at the opponent's feet when you shoot rockets. That way, even if he/she dodges, it is highly likely that the person get some damage by the explosive impact.
  • Wall-Shooting: Same as Ground-Shot. You just aim at the walls near your opponent rather than directly at them. Only works when the other guy is near a wall though.
  • Read Moves: Try to predict what the next move of the enemy will be. Shoot where the enemy will be rather than where he/she is right now, unless you are using instant-damage-delivery weapons. (Shotgun and Double Shotgun)
  • Rocket Jump: Aim your rocket launcher at your feet, and simultaneously jump and shoot. You will jump about 2.5 times (or even more) higher than your normal jump. Useful when you are trying to get items at high places, or taking shortcuts.
  • Grenade Jump: Same as Rocket Jump. Shoot a grenade at where you would like the jump to take place. Get there, then just when the Grenade explodes, jump.
  • Jump and Shoot: Jumping will allow you to make yourself higher than a opponent (for about 1.5 seconds), making the other guy easier to aim with your rockets using Ground-Shots. Also, when you jump, you will get less damage from the opponent's Ground-Shots. The risk is, that you might accidentally Rocket-Jump on the enemy's rocket and go flying high, while the opponent gets a good aim at you when you come down. Jumping allows you to aim easier when you are moving and shooting at the same time, too. Jumping guys are somewhat harder to shoot...
  • Domination with Power-Ups: Control power-ups in Deathmatch. Especially if it's a Quad. On every map, the items reappear at certain intervals, so know the timings for each map. That way, you will always be able to get the Quad, and dominate the match.
  • Staying Above: Usually, it's a good idea to stay on a higher ground your opponent. It is because it's much harder to hit guys above you than guys below you. If the opponent is on a higher ground than you, it is nearly impossible to do Ground-Shots.
  • Lightning: Use the lightning gun wisely. Remember that if you manage to keep the lightning on the guy for more than 4 whole seconds, then the guy is toast even if he has 250 health and 200 armor. You can do all sorts of other funny things with the gun, too.
  • Double Teleport: Double Teleport is basically just teleporting twice really quickly. I'll give you an example in DM6. When you use the teleporter in the center of the map, you come out form another teleporter in the Green Armor room. Then when you enter the same teleporter you just came out of again, then you go to the Mega Health room. What you do when you double teleport in that level is to go into the first teleporter; and when you come out into the green armor room, turn 180 degrees really quickly and go into the teleporter again, and exit into the Mega Health room. If you manage to do it in an instant, then you will have less chance of being telefragged, and more chance of telefragging. Also, you can use it when you come out from the lightning gun hole, avoiding your chance of being hit when you come out.
